How to Show Self-compassion

While you may be able to show compassion for others who are going through a difficult time, it may be harder for you to demonstrate self-compassion. You should show yourself some gentle kindness after you have made a mistake or when something has gone wrong. This will help you feel better about yourself, but it will also improve your relationships, help you break bad habits and improve your chances of success. Here are a few self-compassion techniques that will help you learn how to treat yourself in a kind and loving manner.

self-compassionAppreciate Your Surroundings

You may be tempted to immerse yourself in work, but it is important to take time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. If you follow a busy schedule, you should stop for a few minutes to take a deep breath and notice the sounds and smells around you. Watch how the sunlight slants through the window and listen to how the birds are singing. If you can’t get outside to appreciate the beauty of nature, then simply take pleasure in something indoors, whether it is a cup of creamy hot chocolate or the scent of your favorite candle. This will help you remain calm and focused while also promoting an awareness of how you fit in with the world around you.

Reassure Yourself

There are times when a pat on the back from a friend can make a world of difference, and you can provide that same support for yourself. Touch the skin on your arm while telling yourself something reassuring and calming. The act will release oxytocin, which will help your body to relax. It is the perfect way to boost your confidence while also giving you the assistance you need in order to remain calm during stressful situations.

Remind Yourself to Be Compassionate

When you get swept away by your hectic work schedule or numerous projects, you may forget that you need to show self-compassion. You can remind yourself by leaving little notes in your purse, briefcase or office. The notes can be short and sweet, and they should serve as a reminder that you are working hard and doing your best. They should also remind you to forgive yourself for the little mistakes you make each day.

We are often our harshest critics, but you can change this behavior by consciously making an effort to show self-compassion. You will find that your gentleness toward yourself will help you be more kind and generous to others.
