Moving Past Unemployment

If you are looking for a new job, then you may be feeling a combination of hope, frustration and anxiety. The state of the economy can make it difficult to find work, especially if you have a degree or training in a small or highly competitive field. In order to be successful as you search for a new job, there are some things that you need to do that will help you move past being unemployed.

Value Yourself

As you are looking for a job, you should keep in mind that your value as a person is not determined by whether you are currently employed. If you are filling out applications and tweaking your résumé, then you need to take pride in the fact that you are actively seeking employment. Your working status does not determine your importance or your likeability, and you are valuable to family members, friends and society regardless of whether you have a job.

Do Something that Makes You Feel Good

While you may feel as though you should spend every waking moment pursuing a new job, you may benefit even more by taking this opportunity to do something that makes you feel good. You may choose to take a class to learn something new, or you may want to spend some time each week as a volunteer. When you do things that make you feel good about yourself, you will have the energy and focus you need in order to tackle the search for a new job.

Spend Time with Other People

You may be tempted to isolate yourself until you are once again employed, but this could cause you to miss out on opportunities that may lead to a new job. In between job searches and interviews, spend some time talking to friends over lunch or chatting on the phone. While your search for employment may not be the main topic of conversation, you could learn something valuable that will help you find a new job.

Broaden Your Horizons

As you look for a new employer, try to be open-minded about trying new things. While your degree may have trained you for a specific role, your life experiences may have given you the tools you need to pursue a different path. When you broaden your horizons, you also open more doors that may lead to exciting new career options.

While your ego may be a bit bruised from being unemployed, you shouldn’t let this affect your ability to enjoy life. You will probably face some challenges as you look for a new job, but this may be the perfect opportunity for you to take a new direction that will be even more fulfilling.
